Prison Archives Visit

Following on from a suggestion from Sandra Peake at the WAVE organisation, a group of volunteers from the Prison Service Trust arranged a trip to view the Prison Archives at a discrete storage facility at Holywood Exchange in April.  These Archives are in the early stages of an inventory under the auspices of the National Museums NI.  Some clients may remember that the archives and memorabilia from the history of the Northern Ireland Prison Service were previously housed at the Prison Service College in Millisle.  After the College closed in Millisle, the National Museums NI eventually took over the responsibility of curating the archives in 2019.  It was interesting to note the various artefacts on display in Holywood such as old guns, murals from some of the Loyalist wings, even a straight jacket!  Clearly there is a lot of work ahead for the staff to do and it will all have to be digitalized for future reference.

Many thanks to Karen for accommodating our group and we wish all the staff their success with this project.
